Set in Stone, Fixed in Glass: The Great Mormon Temple and Its Photographers
Published in Hardcover by Signature Books (September, 1992)
Author: Nelson B. Wadsworth
Average review score:

I LOVE IT!!!!!!
I love old photo-history books, and this is one of the best. It shows photographs of the Salt Lake Mormon Temple, taken by various photographers at different times during its construction. Many historic photos are contained here. Also, much of the history of Utah as a Territory can be learned by the photos and the text.

I gained a greater appreciation for the pioneers and their legacy, by reading this book.

Fun Book for Kids Who Hate to Take Baths
As the librarian in charge of buying books for educational programs at a marine-life park, this is by far one of my most treasured books. Children from kindergarten to third grade love this book. The text is written with humor, with some of the best illustrations I've seen. We had a visit from the author a few years ago, when we were lucky enough to get a signed copy. Our copy has been so well-loved, we are now on the hunt for a few new ones, only to find the book is out of print! This is a top-quality book.

Shiner
Published in Hardcover by Hanging Loose Pr (March, 2001)
Author: Maggie Nelson
Average review score:

The Zen of a Beer Can
Well, I guess there is something to the New York School revival, because Maggie Nelson's poetry is more evidence of an inspired blend of quotidian particulars, wit, and attitude. Nelson begins one poem with remembering how she once associated Zen with wisdom. Now, however, she intends to buy "as much beer as five dollars will buy and drink it right here on the sofa." The poem is entitled "A Misunderstanding." The subtle intelligence at work here is very sexy.

A Single Enemy
Published in Paperback by Xlibris Corporation (07 September, 2000)
Author: Nelson R. Capes
Average review score:

Novel would make a great action movie
A Single Enemy reads like a modern action movie - Part 007, part Rambo, and part Clancy-series, but with the literary sophistication to provide a little intellectual stimulation as well. It is a quick and exciting read that combines a man's internal struggle with guilt for his bother's death, war, espionage, and enough romance to go from PG to R.

The author displays an uncanny knowledge of a wide variety of subjects such as aviation, law, music, martial arts, climbing, medicine, and Viet Nam era warfare. While certainly non-technical, you suddenly leave chapters knowing how helicopters fly, how to depose a witness, and how to perform an emergency tracheotomy (but don't try this at home). Passages are so descriptive that the mind lifts photographic images from the page. Every character and every place seems clear in the reader's mind. The author must be well traveled, because the descriptions of places like Tokyo, the Swiss Alps and Ithaca NY are vivid and detailed.

The ending screams for a sequel. The book itself should be made into a movie. Hopefully, the author will oblige us.

Small Business Windows® 95 For Dummies®
Published in Paperback by Hungry Minds, Inc (23 February, 1998)
Authors: Stephen L. Nelson and A D G Books Worldwide
Average review score:

I tried to make this the best book for business owners!
Small Business Windows 95 for Dummies talks about using Windows 95--but all from the perspective of a small business owner, manager, or worker. In other words, I focused on features of Windows that are of interest to people working in a small business. I used small business examples. And I spent quite a bit of time talking about the special problems of using Windows 95 in a small business setting. For example, I explain how you set up small Windows network. (I figure you can do this in about two hours.) And I talk about how you use the Internet as a business tool.

After reading this book I learned how there's an important need for facilitating the spread of communication in Latin America and other areas of the world. Dean insightfully describes the history of the radio in Central America, and how it has impacted the lives of many. A must read if you enjoy the radio, or are interested in being a part of ministry.

Socratic Method and Critical Philosophy, Selected Es
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (January, 1965)
Author: L. Nelson
Average review score:

The Founder of the Neo-Friesian School
As a high school student, Leonard Nelson rediscovered the forgotten German philosopher Jakob Fries, the political activist and rival of G.W.F. Hegel in the years after Napoleon. Nelson thought that Fries had done what no other philosopher had done: retained and extended the spirit and system of the philosophy of Immanuel Kant, the greatest modern philosopher. Tragically, Nelson died young in 1927. But he had written a great deal; and his students, often from exile to escape the Nazis, preserved his memory and published his unfinished books. "Socratic Method and Critical Philosophy" was published by Yale in 1949, containing Nelson's most popular and accessible essays and speeches.
